Circle Dance
- She raised her head Her chin held high
- When music came Across the sky
- From the room above Where merriment lived
- She heard the song And knew how it went
- “From winding waters To swelling sea
- The great-limbed man Is calling me
- To join again In a circle dance
- As once we did A decade hence
- “We clapped as soon The melody went
- The men threescore The ladies again
- A dozen more And here we stood
- For the circle dance On a floor of wood
- “We clicked our heels On the floorboards then
- The first few steps Of the circle dance
- Our eyes did search The hand of a man
- Otherwise we must Stop with the circle dance
- “His yellow-ringed eyes Found me at once
- The hawk across me In line for the dance
- I took one hand The other held high
- We turned one round We made to fly
- “Around the room In glints of yellow
- The candles, his eyes A light truly mellow
- And then there was more We danced alone
- In an empty sky Under a butter moon
- “Come home with me To live in the ocean
- In the clouded sky In eternal motion
- I live on the earth Where rivers are flowing
- Come live with me Forever becoming
- “I'll wreathe you in streams Crown you with thunder
- Show you the world Above it and under
- I listened to him Rent truly asunder
- A moment of silence My greatest blunder
- “In the space of a dance I knew great romance
- One look, one touch A singular chance
- I lived a whole life In that circle dance
- I never did speak And he let me go on
- “Before he went He leaned close to say
- Think well in this time Ten years and a day
- For I will return To take you away
- Don't reject me again In that month of May
- “I will go to my thunder The skies and the sea
- In each drop of rain It's my face you will see
- I will stroke your hair wet And lap at your feet
- When you ford the river You'll be walking with me
- “I was left in the dance And taken among them
- Another my partner I never saw him
- No, I only saw then In each sailing cloud
- The tawny-eyed glint That continued to haunt”
- One day had passed now A decade's hence
- The tune chimed again For the circle dance
- She ascended the stairs Clicked a heel on the floor
- She circled towards Yellow eyes once more
- Those eyes held a question She smiled up at him
- This silence of gold Held a beckoning
- They circled the room From the threescore pairs
- One vanished mid-step No one saw them again
